ASDAN’s updated Beliefs and Values Short Course will help centres meet statutory requirements on spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) education.
With thought-provoking and engaging activities to promote young people’s SMSC development, this multi-level course is suitable for young people of all abilities, mainly aged 13 to 19.
The Beliefs and Values Short Course will enable learners to:
- respect different beliefs and values, and how they contribute to a multicultural society
- gain an awareness of the impact that humans have on the environment and how to protect our planet
- become a responsible citizen and understand the laws needed for a fair and just society
- appreciate the value of peace in society and understand the impact of conflict
- understand how different religions express their beliefs through worship and actions
- explore the concept of inspiration from religious and non-religious perspectives
The course will help centres meet SMSC requirements set out in section 78 of the Education Act 2002 including:
- enabling students to develop their self-knowledge, self-esteem and self-confidence
- enabling young people to distinguish right from wrong and to respect the civil and criminal law of England
- promote tolerance and harmony between different cultural traditions by enabling students to acquire an appreciation of and respect for their own and other cultures
In addition, the Beliefs and Values Short Course will assist centres in meeting the personal development judgement of the Ofsted education inspection framework in England, particularly in relation to ‘understanding that difference is a positive, not a negative, and that individual characteristics make people unique’.
Flexible course
The course contains a comprehensive curriculum that can be easily adapted to school timetables. It can be delivered as an alternative to RE GCSE, as part of curriculum enrichment days or to provide additional developmental activities during tutor time.
The course rewards small steps of achievement with certificates available for learners for as little as 10 hours of work. Up to six ASDAN credits (60 hours of work approx.) gained through the course can be put towards achieving the Certificate of Personal Effectiveness Level 1 and 2 qualification (12 credits required).
